I am an alcoholic struggling to become & stay sober. I have great difficulty sleeping if I don’t drink. A couple of months ago I saw my doctor about getting some sleeping pills so I don’t have to drink every night. She put me on Ambien. I was a little scared because of the stories I had heard, but I was desperate. I hadn’t experienced anything crazy during my first 10 or so nights taking it (over about 3 months), other than waking up in my daughter’s bed. However, that all changed Sunday night. Sunday night I did drink, and for the first time took an Ambien after drinking. I remember taking one Ambien and going to sleep. The next thing I knew, I was in the emergency room. I had NO idea what happened. After being shipped to the local mental ward, because they thought I tried to kill myself, my boyfriend told me that about 2 hours after I went to sleep, I woke up and took the second half of my 30-day prescription. I was in the “hospital” for 3 days. It was the worst experience of my life! I have NEVER been suicidal in my life! I am now a major advocate AGAINST ambien in any form and will be advocting the serious caution not to take ambien with alcohol. My doctor knows I am an alcoholic and did not make that concern known to me.

Note on Suicide
Sadly, visitors often find this site in a state of suicidal depression, and we have lost several readers along the way. If you are feeling depressed and suicidal, *please* do not do it. Your life is meaningful and important to many people, including me. In the U.S., call 1-800-273-8255 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, visit contactwecare.org, or email economistian@gmail.com Suicide is a long term solution to a short term problem. No matter how bad you feel today, there is a very high chance that you will feel better (normal, even) in the future. In fact, it's likely that you are depressed because your sleep cycles are so damaged. New, credible studies are showing that there is virtually no chemical difference between depression and sleep deprivation. They are virtually the same thing. Instead of killing yourself, try changing your life. Research sleep strategies, start working out, find a hobby you are passionate about, and things will get better. I promise. About AmbienOverdose.org: This began as a relatively short article that offered basic information on the drug. Thanks to a constant stream of user comments documenting Ambien experiences good and bad, the site has become a valuable repository of information on experiences people have had with Ambien. I had a couple of drinks then decided to go to bed so I took my ambien as usual. I layed down then decided I didn’t want to go to bed so I got up. I went into my back yard and decided to build a fire in the fire pit since it was so cold out. The next thing I remember in being in the emergency room with 1st and 2nd degree burns. That was a very brief recall and then I remember being in the car with my husband to come home. Again a very brief recall. The next morning I awoke and my husband begins to tell me what happened the night before. He said I tried to burn myself up and he couldn’t stop me. He called 911 because he said I was trying to commit suicide. I have racked my brain trying to remember this but my mind is a blank. I do blame myself since I shouldn’t have drank and taken the ambien. Before this I have not had a problem with the ambien.
I believe drinking with any drug is potientially hazardous.
I had a drink took my ambien woke up in jail, had no idea why I was there..my boyfriend told me that I had been up all night acting crazy…he knew I was sleep walking but did nothing…I jumped in the truck at 7 am got a half a mile from my house ran straight into a telephone pole and totalled the truck…thankfully me and nobody else was injured…but now I am facing a Felony DUI, in Texas. I never ever drink and drive so my boyfriend said it never occurred to him to pick up keys …I went to sleep woke up in a nightmare..(prior DUI’s 2 of them from 21 and 16 years ago)
ok first of all what happend to yall was your own fault, if you are stupid enough to drink and take pills you get what you deserve. no one forced you to take that pill after you have been drinking! just like saying that the 3 meals a day at mcdonalds you eat made you fat!!!! yall are stupid. take responsibility for your own mistakes. and amy you had 2 prior dui….. no pitty for you…. one should be enough for you to GET IT……… yall are pathetic…. i am so glad you didnt kill anyone else…… have fun in prison for that dui amy
Monty, as a guy who enjoys a beer now and then, and as a yankee, you sound like ur from the south, I live in Chicago, presidents home town, so we prolly disagree on a lot. I do agree with what you said to amy. A buddy of mine is a Chicago cop. A car with a family hit by some a&%$ who “just had one drink”, is a tragity. Take a cab amy, or get a boyfriend who is man enough to take your dam keys. Don’t make excuses, don’t lie either. I NEVER drink & drive. Then u said u did, TWICE. Geez. Montys right. Stay in jail till ya get to aa or something.
