Ambien Blackout / Addiction

I started on ambien when I was thirteen and have taken it every single night for sleep since then. I am 29 years old now, so I guess I have been taking it for about 16 years. My tolerance didn’t go up until after the birth of my son in 2009…now I have to take double or triple my prescribed dose to fall asleep. I black out every night and am terrified that I have or will do something to someone else or hurt myself sometime…but i can’t stop taking it because I am even more terrified of not being able to fall asleep and living like a zombie. It has such power over my life–I have started craving it at night (“i can’t wait til the day is over so i can take an ambien and chill”). I want to stop taking this drug but I need an alternative. has anyone else found an alternative medication that is as effective but does not make them blackout or crave higher doses?
