Let me make clear where some has mentioned Ambien is a benzodiazapine. Not true. It acts on some of the same receptors in the thalamus of your brain as benzos, with the same results, but are not, such as Lunesta and Sonta are in a different class of drugs like Ambien. Common benzos marketed for sleep, are Dalmane, Restoril, Halcion and on and on. They work just the same as the ones marketed for anxiety, such as Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Serax, Tranxene, Librium, Ativan and twenty or so more. Actually some for anxiety such as Xanax and others in the maximum dose works better than some marketed for sleep, ex. Restoril.

I can relate Brian, the terrible dreamlike feelings when you don't take the med are enough to scare a person to death.

All I can say is BE AWARE. I've taken this drug for 10 years and the withdrawl feelings are terrifying. I can't get off it and am now experiencing nightime seizures in my sleep. I wake up with a loud bang noise and feeling of complete terror. I'm about to start the long road of detoxifying - and I've only taken 10mg all these years. If you think you won't have problems getting off this med, you're kidding only yourself.

Night tremors, night terrors, seizures, it's just not worth it. I wish someone could help me :(

I love Ambien. I take it and suddenly my crazy mind floats away and I drift over towards my bed and lay down for a quiet slumber. Sometimes I do wake up and have to repeat the process, which is becoming quite annoying. I wish the first few times after I tried the Ambien the feeling would continue, but it seems to lose it's sparks just after a few days.

I am 64 and was on Ambien CR for over a year because I don't sleep. My mind won't turn off at night. At first I thought it was the wonder drug because I slept. After a few months I had bad side effects like eating at night and wondering the next day who ate all the potato chips. My husband assured me it wasn't him and he doesn't really like them. I would get phone calls from online schools telling my I applied to them for more information and I swore I didn't give them my name and phone number. The pill would get me to sleep but would be awake in 4 hours. I knew I had to get off of Ambien CR. I was on the 12.50 dose and would cut them in half and take only half a pill for a few days. I also found a natural non addictive sleeping pill called "Sleep Tonight through Amazon. I would take half an Ambien and 2 Sleep Tonight pills for a few days. I cut the half Ambien in half and take one quarter of that and 2 Sleep Tonight. I stopped the Ambien CR pill in 2 weeks and just take the Sleep Tonight which works and my mind stops racing using a non addictive natural pill. You cannot believe how excited I am from being off Ambien and don't understand why a Dr would put me on something so addictive in the first place. Anyone can get off of Ambien it just takes some time and think how good you will feel without it. No more worries of what I did during the night that I don't remember the next day or being anxious when the phone rings that I gave out my number over the internet.
Good luck to everyone who tries to get off of this horrible pill. YOU CAN DO IT..

I cannot sleep without 10 mg of Ambien each night. I tried to go off of it during my last vacation (stay-cation) because I knew I wouldn't get sleep for the first few nights. I was partially right. I had severely fragmented sleep for four nights and terrible dreams when i did manage to be in a sleep cycle. I finally had to give in and take one on the fifth night because i felt like crap.

try to cut down ths use, and eventually throw away and remaining pill you have left. If you dont have it then you wont use it. it only takes a day to get out of your system. stay away from it and return to your family as a normal person., They will love you for it.

Susan Chana Lask, I applaud you for what you have done with this terrible drug. Unfortunatley it has got me incredibily addicted for over a year now and I cant get any help. I have tried to discontinue Ambien, but the withdrawl symptoms are not tolerable and im not able to function for days with no end. I am also taking at least 30 mg per night. I cant even seem to get my husband to believe me. He thinks its just in my head, just like everyone else. I have begged different doctors to understand my condition and they feel that I will be fine with no other medication to help, and I have tried to go to a mental facility and are way too pricey for our budget. Im 29 years old with 2 young children and my resources are depleting and im afraid im not going to wake up and end up dead if I dont get some help. Im not sure if you can help me, but im so desperate im willing to reach out to anyone that will listen. Thank you, Dawn

I filed the Ambien Class Action in 2006 that resulted in the FDA mandating not just Sanofi-Aventis but all 13 sleep manufacturers to use the exact warnings I fought for one year for. See http://www.appellate-brief.com/knowledge/class-actions/ambien

I'm writing a book about the Ambien experience because I believe it will rank the worst drug out there--after all, its a hypnotic allowed to turn .001% of the 26 million users, or 26,000 people, into Ambien Zombies who do kill others and themselves under the influence. And of course, if they're not dead, then there's the Tiger Woods and Kennedy's driving around in stupors and blaming the drug.

Time to WAKE UP AMERICA--we're all being sedated.

I take Ambien, I have reduced my dose to 1/2 a pill at night, but I still OFTEN get up in middle of the night and eat, or surf the internet (I find bizarre chat transcripts the next day), and once or twice, I know I have had sex I can't really recall happening. I am dependent on it to sleep now, if I do not take it, I do not sleep for days, or maybe sleep 2-4 hours for several days straight, until I take one and then sleep a whole sleep cycle (6-8 hours generally). I was prescribed them because my nightmares are so bad that I was avoiding sleeping. I know I still have the nightmares, but at least I do not wake up in a panic from them anymore, and I do not remember most of them. I also take Temazepam for this, WITH the Ambien. It's a pretty heavy sedative cocktail.
